After hours of stiring over an open fire the end result was anywhere from a soft soap to a hard mass. This soap was used for everything that needed to be cleaned, laundry, dishes, floors, animals and human bodies and scalps. Even after soapmaking became more sophisticated - soap bars where used for bathing and shampooing of hair.
